Comment:

 I would love to see this ticket re-opened just to add the user profile
 settings. This will go along way and just be the first step to help
 plugins and themes start to standardize and improve support for dark mode.

 The setting should be a simple dropdown:
 * System (Default)
 * Light
 * Dark

 As system is the default, it should not cause any issues by default. This
 should have a hook to let developers register more options in the dropdown
 if needed.

 The plugin mentioned in this thread has considerably expanded into
 something more than the original request of this ticket, so I don't think
 its a valid example any more.
