 Thanks, everybody, for working on this.

 This issue was long due to be fixed. I refreshed the patch and attempted
 to incorporate the latest changes on trunk for this fix, and tried to keep
 the fix as simple as possible.

 I will also add the tests shortly to make sure any regressions hereafter
 are captured.
