 From an accessibility perspective, I think that the high contrast white
 offers more clarity, but is less likely to stand out as different, since
 it will visually blend in with the other text.

 I think keeping the number is critical, as it allows a user to determine
 whether the notifications have changed without needing to clear them all.
 The colored dot is just binary: either you have notifications, or you
 don't. A number can give you a lot more context for what those
 notifications might mean.

 I'd prefer design #3, with the red text, a number, and the white border. A
 particular advantage to moving it onto the icon is that it can be made
 visible in the collapsed menu view, which would be helpful for people
 using that view.
