 Thanks, @Clorith. I hadn't considered the pre-installation calls. Those
 are extremely difficult to modify and the env variable could make that
 easier.

 I don't grok. What makes this a "very deep filter"? I don't think it was
 hard to write up my example to demonstrate that this is already possible.
