Comment:

 This ticket has been inactive for more than 2 years. Given the lack of
 traction and concern about the current direction, I think we should close
 this again.

 There seems to be no reasonable way to achieve a better outcome here. So
 I'm going to go with `wontfix`. If you disagree with that, we may want to
 change it to `maybelater` - but the lack of traction IMO would justify a
 closure (for now) either way.
