 I have created this follow-up ticket
 https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/63206

 As I suggested @audrasjb I think that it's totally safe and sound to merge
 this into 6.8 (as is replicating the exact same behavior of other calls to
 this function), and we can continue towards 6.9 with the new major revamp
 I'm proposing in #63206 as a more solid solution.
