 Ah, @pratiklondhe — you're right!

 I had the Activity Log plugin enabled to log, well, any activity and
 errors, and it seems that the logging itself caused the issue.

 No issue with Activity Log disabled

 I'll take this issue to them

 Thank you for helping me to troubleshoot this one. Didn't expect my
 logging to be the actual cause of the problem. Will check without anything
 at all enabled next time. ;)
