 Unfortunately it's not as simple to implement this on all servers for
 everybody, everywhere. Part of the problem is finding the image meta from
 the image URI. Another part is that it will probably need a bit more in
 .htaccess which would probably not work everywhere.

 But generally I agree, it's time to revisit. Any takers that would like to
 help? :)
