Comment:

 I agree with the earlier comments that this is best left to a plugin. It's
 for much the same reasons so I won't restate them.

 @chesio thank you for providing the code sample; @jqz I hope this will
 give you a head start on limiting updates for plugins that do use semantic
 versioning.
