 Thanks for all of the work here, everyone! I am going to leave this in the
 5.8 milestone past the beta 1 deadline (which is today). This only affects
 tests, so it can be committed during the beta cycle. There's not enough
 time before beta 1 for me to give this one more pre-commit review, but I'd
 like to get this in by end of week.

 @SergeyBiryukov have you started reviewing yet? Happy to self assign, but
 don't want to double efforts.
