 I have tested this with product taxonomies in Woocommerce.
 To reproduce,
 Create a Custom Taxonomy for products with any relevant plugin.
 Then, start populating this hierarchy. Whether you do this manually or not
 makes no difference.
 Open a product and check your items as you add them.
 As soon as the items in your taxonomy require a second page to be
 displayed (50+), many lose their hierarchy (They are displayed in list
 fashion one below the other).

 You can use a plugin called BulkPress in order to be able to add items
 fast.
 I am using this list of terms:
