 @jorbin beat me to it, but I had the same thoughts earlier when I first
 read this ticket.

 I'd also add that there are some benefits to having emails recognized as
 unique when adding additional `.`s. For example, when creating test
 accounts.

 If viewing emails with periods as unique is important for the site you are
 managing, a plugin is the best bet.
