 Added some initial tests.  More tests are likely needed before this is
 completely ready for core.  Would also still like to know others opinions
 on this direction.  `array_merge_recursive`  can be a potentially
 expensive operation, so if we can perhaps figure out an alternative, I
 would be :+1:
