 I just saw, I didn't mention it in my last comment: I wrote an alternative
 MO file Reader (read only) that is faster and uses less memory than the
 current implementation. That's how I started my plugin.
 http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-performance-pack/ With caching enabled
 performance hit is almost minimal compared to not translated WordPress
 setups.
