 This comment outlines the things Google Fonts does that would be difficult
 to replicate in a self-hosted environment. Difficult, but not impossible,
 I think. I would welcome and be glad to assist anyone interested in making
 a patch to serve Open Sans locally from within WordPress. If anyone is
 interested, I'd highly recommend skimming over that entire discussion
 thread to understand the internationalization and browser support issues
 behind what stopped us from being able to implement it in 3.8.
