 This is intended behaviour as a feature. If you wish to disable it you can
 remove the hooks that apply the transformation in a custom plugin or your
 theme's functions.php. E.g.

 remove_filter( 'the_excerpt', 'wptexturize' );
 remove_filter( 'comment_text', 'wptexturize' );
