 That's a no go on that little diddy.

 While I was in there I realized why they are different logic.
 switch_to_blog and set_blog

 What I still believe is the_post_thumbnail() should work with
 switch_to_blog, and I will try the second thing you mentioned with
 wp_upload_dir()
