 It doesn't make sense to not have a filter on the returned value of this
 function. I can think of several instances where this would be useful.

 I also inserted a "pre_" filter at the beginning of the function so
 plugins/themes can short-circuit the function as well.

 I'm hoping this is small enough to get in for 3.0.
