As for the .htaccess concern you can easily remove admin-ajax.php from
your restrictions by doing something like:

Order allow,deny
Allow from all
Satisfy any
</Files>
}}}
As for SSL, as nacin, rboren and myself discussed, we agree that it would
actually be a benefit if the admin was protected by SSL.
