 12186.diff messed up the if statements a bit so only repeat and no-repeat
 were working. I switched it to a switch like you did for the others.

 background-repeat2.diff contains repeat previewing and the above fix.

 This seems to work pretty well for tiling and displays the area big enough
 to get an idea of what it will work like

 I might try to work on some of the other todos in here too.
