it back to translated strings. Is the object field now being used in its
place? What is append for? It seems fairly useless. We should not be
persisting translated strings. Translations can change.
Append is used for displaying the object's nice name in the UI. Using keys
gives you the machine version of the object name which doesn't display
nicely in the UI (e.g. Post Tag and post_tag).
