 Interestingly I was doing an ad-hoc presentation on WP3.0 at the Atlanta
 WordPress user group last night and when I mentioned this problem with the
 theme I had a whole series of hands fly up, mostly web designers in the
 audience, all wanting to ask about how to fix this problem.  Seems I
 wasn't the only one who views the existing approach as less than optimal.
