 @mhbar: Problem is, Otto's option doesn't solve any of the original
 problems! It just solves the minor problem of changing the siteurl (which
 would also be solved by the shortcode). ;-)

 @Otto: I agree that the shortcode has certain (minor IMO) disadvantages,
 but most of the problems you mention can be immediately solved by making
 the export function parse the shortcode (maybe it does already even?)

 In this case, I think that as you say the media shortcode is a "necessary
 evil", since it solves far more problems than it creates.

 Can you think of another solution that would solve the original problems?
 Obviously it's possible to parse every post upon deleting an image, and
 remove the code. That would solve one of the problems, but it would be a
 horrible and resource-intensive way to go about it. The shortcode would be
 much better than that.

 Maybe we should have a poll or something? This is clearly an extremely
 important decision, since it affects the entire media handling of
 WordPress, and a couple of us discussing the benefits/problems of each
 system won't necessarily get something which makes the most people
 happy...
