[wp-testers] Permalink Problems?

I'm using 2.5 RC2 and, under the Permalinks settings, I've entered in:

/category/ as the category base and
/tags/ as the tag base.

Although .htaccess is set to 666, it doesn't seem to have any effect.

My default 'Common Settings' for permalinks are:

/%year%/%postname%/

With, or without, the above entries for category and tag base,

category links appear as: http://mydomain.com/category/mycategory and

tag links appear as: http://mydomain.com/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=mytag

In fairness, I didn't use these in 2.3.  I've done some searching around
the forums and documentation and couldn't find a clear answer.

Any ideas?
