I was getting the same error too in Firefox 2. The Swfupload demos 
(http://demo.swfupload.org/) didn't work too. Then updated the flash 
plugin to the latest version (9.0.1.15) and it works well now.

Perhaps the message "An error occurred in the upload. Please try again 
later" can be changed to something like: "An error occurred in the 
upload. Please update your browser's Flash plugin or try again later"
