I've never held much stock in online 'reviews' - since so many of them (yelp, amazon, ebay, etc., etc.) are vulnerable to unethical competitors, scam artists, or just plain jerks. I've read reviews of products and places I know very well - but if I didn't, I'd never recognize them in some of the off the wall review comments. In at least one case, I saw a highly negative report on a store and it's owner (who I know quite well) -- placed by a former employee who had been fired for theft... Anyone else reading that review would give the store a wide berth...

On the other hand, I do trust references from satisfied customers, especially if I can look them up independently. Before I'd spend any substantial funds with any contractor I'd try to contact a previous customer or two. When I bid on work, I offer names of some of my previous clients who I have worked for, and anyone can look at websites and drop the owner a note with any available 'contact us' form.
Yes I think transparency is key. I had a lot of bad experiences here,
and a couple of good ones. I have no idea why there is so much worry
about bad feedback. When you do a good job people say it outright. If
you are interested on positive feedback only try Flattr then ;) A
balanced way of sharing feedback is foremost important, especially
when you work long distance like it often happens here. Plus people
have better things to do than just vent for no reason here.
