I too use OSX, and I did my first translation in SubEthaEdit, just
editing the .po-file manually. It's one way to go, but it's not very
good in the long run, when you want to update your translation to
later releases of WP. It is fairly common that strings change, is
added and removed.
In the resent work I've done, I have tried to use Poedit
(www.poedit.net) to do the updating from newer .pot and also to do
the actual translation.
But the program is really buggy and unstable under OSX, and I, up
until this day, has never been able to produce a .mo-file or to loop
through a code mass to extract the gettext strings with it.
Instead I have installed Marc Liyanage's php5-package (www.entropy.ch/
software/macosx/php/) witch has gettext compiled with it. I then use
the Terminal to make the .mo file, witch works fine.
So, that's my best tip.
