[wp-hackers] Custom classes for content's link

Is there a easy (or, at least, straight-forward) way to filter this field
back in? I was attempting to help someone in the WPORG support forums who
had the same question regarding its disappearance. I found the wpdevel
comment noting that the decision was made to remove the link class field,
but couldn't find anything simple/straight-forward to recommend to
re-introduce it.
