Or can I just use
get_categories()<http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_categories>
?

$postformatobj = get_categories( 'taxonomy' => 'post-formats' );
$postformatcount = $postformatobj->count;

Any reason why that wouldn't work?
