1) This feature was announced September 3rd -

and the first patch related to this landed on 2010-09-27 -
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/15671 .  Not knowing until it's too
late?  Are you having a laugh or just not paying attention?

2) WordPress is not a commercial product for Automattic.  WordPress is an
open source product that I am proud to contribute too.  You may want to
check your facts.

3)  If you don't like what the core team is doing, contribute to core so
that you have a say.
