An "external" in SVN terms is simply a chunk of code that is directly
included from some other SVN repository. That way, when Akismet
updates, then they don't have to reimport it into the WordPress trunk
or get the updates or anything like that. It's just automatically
included.

Externals are ways to combine pieces of code from other projects
without having to constantly refresh them manually.
