[wp-hackers] htaccess necessary?

I am inheriting a site from a client where the previous developer never set
up permalinks for SEO. So current link structure for a post looks like this:

http://www.site.com/?p=3103

Is it necessary for me to set 301 redirects in my .htaccess file for
http://www.site.com/?p=3103 to http://www.site.com/2010/04/my-post-title or
will Wordpress handle it automatically for me?
