Another use case would be to allow loading via AJAX.  So instead of /foo/page/2/ it could be:

/foo/#page2 or 
/foo/#101-120 or 
/foo/101-120/ (non-AJAX but post ids) 

It wouldn't be built into core but a plugin should be able to do if it wanted to.
