I would much prefer if old plugins were officially "retired" or archived rather than being removed.  I have had situations where I've wanted to see an old plugin -- knowing it no longer worked, but wanting to see the original code for some reason.

For example, a coder built a web site for a company I worked with, and used a customized version on a plugin.  Later when I was trying to upgrade, I wanted to see what exactly he customized.  I could have done this easily if the original was still available for download, (diff folders), but it wasn't.  Really made things hard for me at the time....
