There's some discussion on that ticket that regexes use a
disproportionately high amount of processing power for the small
amount to be gained in this particular scenario, so if this
functionality isn't going to be pulled then it would be preferred to
use a string replace (as per Mark Jaquith's suggestions on that
ticket) rather than a regex replace.
