Indeed. Before you install a plugin, do a code review.

A few things I consider:

* Does it solve 80% of the need or does it introduce a bunch of  
unwanted features that I have to turn off?
* Is it hooking cleanly into WordPress?
* Could I write a smaller, more focused plugin and call it a day?
* What would Otto do? (j/k)
