A couple of suggestions. Can you identify the ones he wants to keep with
search? If so, search for those (in the edit posts page) and publish them,
then you can just delete all the drafts. If you can't publish them yet, set
them all to a future date and publish. You just need to separate them from
the draft ones you don't want.

Or if that is not possible, remember you can specify the number of posts to
show on each page. Drop down the screen options, set it to 50 or 100, then
you only have 6 or 3 screens to go through. Usually it will be quicker to
check everything, then clear the check mark on the ones you want to keep.
Then mass delete/trash.
Presumably most of the comments will also be deleted when you delete the
posts you don't want.
