[wp-hackers] Search custom field by default

Hello

I am using scribu's custom field taxonomies plugin along with a custom extension he built for a client. I am trying to get a search form to search a custom field by default instead of when a checkbox is ticked. 
Ie
Currently the user has to tick a checkbox to search the 'img_count' field. That needs to be reversed. It should only show posts that do have a value in 'img_count' unless the user ticks the box.  

I suppose I could do it with a bit of JavaScript but I'd rather not!

Sorry if this is a bit vague! My head hurts after too long looking at the same thing!

Any ideas??
