My apologies - it was a configuration issue related to adding HyperDB without an explicit 'charset' in the add_database call.

Subject: [wp-hackers] WP 3.0 Upgrade character set woes
I'm working on upgrading an existing 2.9.1 WPMU installation to WP 3.0. One issue I have is that after I upgrade, any special characters are being mis-encoded. The wp_x_posts database tables are utf8, wp-config.php says DB_CHARSET is utf8, the HTML headers say utf8, but the characters are being sent as latin1. If I manually force the browser to latin1, I see everything as it should be. Where do I need to start to solve this issue?
Thanks,
Harper Shelby
