I've been using the plugin-downloads plugin for a while now, but also
adapted it. I added in a shortcode to display the stats on my site, if
you haven't added that in - can I suggest it as a feature? (feel free
to contact me off list if you want a copy of what I hashed together)

I also just recently came across plugin-info and was also pointed at
wp-plugin-data - which sounds similar to what you have done.
