Remember that in opensource community, when a project does something beyond
acceptance, or when people think there are ways to improve it, they could
just fork it.

What prevents others from removing ads, etc. and then redistribute the
plugin?

If you provide value beyond the code, such as support, community, etc, you
are close to discovering the real value that you can monetize, so why the
ads at all?
