[wp-hackers] can url auto-completing in wordpress by turned off somehow?

No, it doesn't and the auto-complete is a bit too liberal at times, IMO. 
It chooses to redirect at random based on some target urls. That's why I 
raised a bug for it.  http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/8948
