Not sure if this is what you mean, but if get_avatar() is used to
generate the Gravatar URL, the image will respect the Gravatar
preferences in the Settings menu -- i.e. Wavatar, Identicon, whatever.

And, um, to "select" an image to display, you go to
http://www.gravatar.com/ and upload one. ;)
