So, is this part of the reason it hasn't been added to core? The endless 
bikesheding. If you are fine with it scribu, I hope to use your patch 
with a project I'm going to be doing in a few weeks. Hopefully, with the 
extra real world usage of the API a few problems that people have will 
be resolved. I'll  probably be experimenting as well.

Hopefully, this can be resolved by 3.0 or 3.1.
