Thanks Steve, but when the post is saved and viewed again in the post
editing screen (under the HTML tab) the <p> and <br /> tags are removed
(this may not be immediately apparent but switch between visual and HTML
tabs and you'll see they are).

Is it possible to prevent the removal of <p> tags in the post editing screen
(under the HTML tab) but not in the_content?
