Additional datapoint: If I create a brand new 2.7.1 blog, it's  
affected by the same problem in the same way. I can create categories  
and put posts in them, but all categories appear empty. So this is  
definitely not a matter of old data being corrupted - it's a server- 
wide WP problem.
