WordPress has no support for different "type" parameters on the
atom:content. You could send type="ooga-booga" and it would still do
the same thing.

The content is expected to be plain text, just as if it was typed in
on the post publishing screen. It will then get run through the
automatic formatting process like everything else. So EOL's do matter,
because it's not accepting "xhtml", it's accepting plain text.
