Thing is, this solution would allow the translator to make sure the
translated string fits on his screen, but there is no guarantee that
the length will be enough for other users (different default font,
different screen, different settings, etc...).

IMHO, the only viable solution would be be able to "push" the width
for longer words - then it would lie on the translators to choose
their words wisely in order to not push it to wide.
