[wp-hackers] Override the /author/ URL

Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there a reason why the
author base isn't changeable through the permalinks options like the
categories? It seems to me that they are equivalently in need of
changing in some cases (i.e. when the categories are 'types' or when
the authors are 'users', 'djs', 'translators' or 'contributors'). It
would also make it a lot easier for people to translate it without
having the admin translated (along with all the headaches associated
with full translation).  Is it just that no one has coded it?
