... and has a huge hidden benefit (or at least had for me) when
porting a site from another CMS to WP and trying to keep all the old
links working.

That one feature in 2.3 enabled me to use one-liners in the .htaccess
rather than have a 16,000 line .htaccess file. Props to Mark Jaquith
for his work on that.
